Fall Sports Wrap Up 2018-19
The boys’ softball season wrapped up the first week of October. This season was full of highs and lows, but they topped their record of 2-8 last year with a 5-5 season. The season was capped with a week of 4 straight wins, including 3 consecutive come from behind wins in the last inning. The offense was led by Kobe Bender finishing with a .684 batting average, with 9 home runs and 26 RBIs. Other offensive standouts were Ethan Johnson with a .632 batting average, Nick Boswell with a .462 batting average, and Jemerrio Rieves with a .421 batting average. The defense was strong lead by a core of second year players Kobe Bender, Nick Boswell, Jovanni Villagomez, Anthony Hnilo and first year players Jemerrio Rieves and pitcher Bryan Garcia. Even though the team is graduating six 8th grade students, they hope for another successful campaign next season.
Willow Springs Girls Basketball 2018 had another great year developing into more complete basketball players with character and integrity. The 8th grade came into the season with a small squad that had to work through injuries and various other struggles. It taught the girls how to work through adversity as a team and taught them strong character. They had a 6th grade girl volunteer to join the team, and she chose to play with them through the season. By the end of the season she had improved so much she was starting. The 6/7th grade team worked on basic skills in the beginning of the year. They learned how to play the game well with respect. The first few games were a learning experience, and in each game they improved. Towards the end of the season these girls were running defensive traps, defensive zones, and had learned some offensive plays. The coaches are proud of both the teams and look forward to another exciting season next year!
Co-Ed Cross Country:
Along with Coach Dondlinger and Delahera, the cross country team started the fall cross country season with an ambitious group of students. The team participated in 6 track meets, ran at Pleasantdale and Lyons Township South High School. During each meet, the runners ran a two mile race and competed against hundreds of other 5th-8th grade students in the area. Willow Springs is proud to report that many runners were able to increase their time with each race they ran. More importantly, all runners who finished the season ran with integrity and showed great team spirit to their fellow teammates. We look forward to seeing our next group of 5th-8th grade runners for the 2019-2020 season of cross country!
